  • About Mertz Hall

Mertz is situated very close to Parrish and other academic buildings, giving it a great location, fairly close to everything with expansive green spaces around the community. Boasting a grand staircase upon entering the building, large family room space with a kitchen, and a computer area with printer, Mertz feels more like a home than a residence hall. Mertz houses about 140 students from all four classes, promoting a sense of community within the residence hall. Mertz has three floors, each featuring a lounge and kitchenette area. Rooms are very spacious and all rooms include a large closet. Rooms in Mertz are a mix of doubles and singles, are mostly carpeted, and feature painted cinder block walls and shades on the windows.

Rooms are decently big, recently renovated, and clean. However, its in between the two major party spots so it is loud on thursday and saturday nights. Recent renovations made cosmetic improvements, and the kitchen renovation has decreased the frequency of fire alarms. However, the building has some issues including no CO detector in the basement which resulted in dangerous levels of CO on the first residential floor, malfunctioning of the humidity control system leading to toxic mold in some rooms, and frequent malfunctioning of both the hot and cold water systems - showers are often either scalding or freezing. The lights in the rooms are horrible. Highly recommend string lights and/or lamps. People in Mertz tend to disrespect the shared kitchens, especially the 1st floor kitchen, which is the nicest and therefore most residents will use it. I have had so much food and kitchen supplies stolen from the kitchen. Once I went to Worthmore (campus "free store" where students can donate stuff) and found a bowl that had been stolen from me. Yes, someone stole my stuff and then donated it...
